You press the button and nothing happens. Before assuming the opener is dead, know that most remote problems come down to a handful of simple causes. Work through these in order, and you'll usually find the culprit in under ten minutes.
This one test splits the problem in half. If the wall button opens the door, the opener and door are fine and the issue is the remote or its signal. If the wall button does nothing either, check that the opener is plugged in, the outlet has power, and the door isn't locked using the wall-panel lock button (a lock light or blinking panel is the clue).
Batteries lose strength in freezing temperatures, and a remote left in a car overnight on a January night in Utah can fail until it warms up. Keep a spare battery on hand, and bring the remote inside during hard cold snaps.
If a fresh battery, correct programming, and a clear antenna don't help, the opener's receiver board may have failed. This is common on units over 12–15 years old, and on openers that have taken a power surge. Receiver board repairs are often cheaper than a new opener, but on older models replacement can make more sense. We'll tell you which, with the price upfront.
One safety note: if the door moves but reverses, stalls, or strains, that points to springs or sensors, not the remote. Don't keep pressing the button, and don't touch the springs or cable brackets. Call us instead.
